Ribbed wrist

Row 1: ch9, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch until the end (8)

Row 2: ch1, sc in the back loop of each st until the end (8) tip: I prefer to work in both loops for the last st of the row for a neater edge.

Repeat Row 2 until you have 33 rows of sc. Join the last row to the first row with slip stitches. Turn so seam is on the inside, then turn work to work along the edges of the sc rows.

Main mitten

Row 1: ch2, hdc in the end of each sc row, sl st, turn (33)

Row 2: ch1, *sc, ch1, sk1*, repeat * around, sc in last st, sl st, turn (33)

Row 3: ch2, hdc, ch1, work a row of feather stitch starting from the next st, 16 in total. Finish with hdc, sl st, turn (33: 16 fs, 2 hdc, 1 ch)

Row 4: ch1, (sc, ch1, sc, ch1) in the hdc, sk1, *sc, ch1, sk1* repeat * around, (sc, ch1, sc) in the last hdc, sl st, turn (37)

Row 5: ch2, hdc, ch1, work a row of feather st, hdc, sl st, turn (17 fs) note: on the increase stitches, the same stitch will be used twice for the lower part of the feather stitch

Row 6: ch1, (sc, ch1, sc, ch1) in the hdc, sk1, *sc, ch1, sk1*, repeat * x8, (sc, ch1, sc, ch1) in the next st, sk1, *sc, ch1, sk1* repeat * until the end, sc in last st, sl st, turn (41)

Row 7: Repeat Row 5 (19 fs)

Row 8: ch1, *sc, ch1, sk1* repeat * around, sc in last st, sl st, turn (41)

Row 9: This row starts the space for the thumb. Sl st across 6 sts, ch2 and hdc in the same st, ch1, starting in the same st work 15 feather sts, ch3 and sl st into the first hdc of this row, skipping 8 sts in total, turn (15 fs)

Row 10: Repeat Row 8 (37)

Row 11: Repeat Row 5 (17 fs) note: when you reach the thumb space, work both the 2nd and 3rd loops of the feather stitch into the same sp given there is no row below.

Row 12: ch1, *sc, ch1, sk1*, repeat * around, sc in last st, sl st, turn (37)

Row 13: ch2, hdc, ch1, work a row of feather st, hdc, sl st, turn (17 fs)

Row 14: ch1, sc, ch1, sk2, *sc, ch1, sk1* repeat * x8, sc, ch1, sk2, *sc, ch1, sk1* repeat * to end, sc, sl st, turn (35)

Row 15: Repeat Row 13 (16 fs)

Stop here for fingerless gloves. Keep going for full mittens.

Row 16: Repeat Row 14 (33)

Row 17: Repeat Row 13 (15 fs)

Skip to Row 20 if you want to make a smaller mitten

Row 18: Repeat Row 12 (33)

Row 19: Repeat Row 13 (15 fs)

Repeat Rows 18 and 19 if you want to make a larger mitten

Row 20: ch1, sc, ch1, sk1, *sc, ch1, sk2 repeat * around, sc in last st, sl st, turn (23)

Row 21: Repeat Row 13, do not turn (10 fs)

Row 22: ch2, dc2tog around, hdc in the last st, sl st (12)

Row 23: ch1, sc2tog around, sl st (6)

Sew closed.

Thumb

Row 1: join yarn to the thumb space, ch2 and work 10 dc2tog evenly around the space, sl st (10)

Work more or fewer dc2tog if you need a smaller or larger thumb space, ideally a multiple of 2.

Row 2: ch2, dc2tog in each st, starting each new dc2tog in the last st of the previous dc2tog so as not to decrease, sl st (10)

Rows 3 to 4: Repeat Row 2 (10)

Add or remove a repeat to adjust the thumb length.

Row 5: ch1, dc2tog around (to decrease), sl st (5)

Sew closed.

Repeat for the other hand!
