Block Stitch Scarf Pattern

You will need

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn in 2 colours
    • 492yds/233g base colour
    • 75yds/35g contrasting colour
  • 5.5mm/I hook
  • Scissors and needle for finishing

I used Stylecraft Special Aran in colours Mushroom and Burgundy.

Concentration level

Simple stitches centered on single and double crochet with a video tutorial available. Works up very quickly!

Stitch terms & abbreviations

Pattern is written in US terms.

Chain – ch
Slip Stitch – sl st
Stitch(es) – st(s)
Skip – sk
Single Crochet – sc
Double Crochet – dc

The scarf is made using just single and double crochet, when combined in this way known as the block stitch. You will find a video tutorial here.

Block Stitch Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

Row 1 (colour A): ch37, dc in the 4th ch from the hook and each ch to the end. change colour, turn (35: 34dc + 1ch3)

Row 2 (colour B): ch1, sc between the last dc from the prev row and the dc before it. *ch2, sk 3 dcs and sc in between the 4th and 5th dc sts below – leaving a cluster of 3 dc*, repeat * to the end, finishing with a ch2, sc between the final 2 sts, change colour, turn (xx)

Row 3 (colour A): ch3, *dc3 in the ch2 sp*, repeat * to the end of the row, finishing with a final dc in the last st, change colour, turn

Row 4 (colour B): Repeat Row 2

Row 5 (colour A): Repeat Row 3

Row 6 (colour B): Repeat Row 2

Row 7 (colour A): Repeat Row 3

Row 8 (colour B): Repeat Row 2

Row 9 (colour B): Repeat Row 3 – do not change colour

Rows 10 to 16: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 – row 16 do not change colour

Rows 17 to 138 (colour A): Repeat rows 2 and 3, not changing colour

Row 139 (colour B): changing colour, repeat Row 2

Rows 140 to 145: Repeat rows 2 and 3

Row 146 (colour B): Repeat row 2 – do not change colour

Row 147 to 160: Repeat rows 2 and 3
