Feather Stitch Crochet Hat

You will need

  • <270 yards or 140g of aran/worsted weight yarn
  • 4.5mm hook
  • Scissors and needle for finishing
  • Pom pom

Intermediate, with this stitch pattern it’s easy to miss a stitch or miscount.

Special Stitches

Feather Stitch:

  • Yarn over (YO), pull up a loop through the ch1 sp (3 loops on hook)
  • YO, pull up a loop through the stitch directly underneath from the row below (5 on hook)
  • YO, pull up a loop through the next ch1 sp (7 on hook)
  • YO, pull through all loops, ch1
  • Start the next feather stitch from the same chain space as the last.

Dec:

when decreasing on the sc rows, *sc, ch1, sk1* as normal.
On the dec stitch:
skip 2 sts
pull up a loop from the 3rd st
pull up a loop from the 4th st
pull through both loops

sc2tog:

Pull up a loop from the 1st st
Pull up a loop from the 2nd st
YO and pull through both loops

dc2tog:

The dc2tog is worked the following way so that it looks similar to the feather stitch:
YO, pull up a loop from the 1st st
YO, pull up a loop from the 2nd st
YO, pull through 4 out of 5 loops
YO, pull through remaining loops

Free Feather Stitch Crochet Hat Pattern

Counts for each size will be in the format (S, M, L)

Ribbing

Row 1: ch11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and to the end (10)

Row 2: ch1, turn, sc in the back loop of each st (10)

Repeat Row 2 until you have (93, 97, 101) rows.

Join the first and last rows with sl sts to form a loop. Turn the right way round to continue, leaving the sl sts on the inside.

Hat Body

Row 1: turn to work horizontally, ch1, sc in the top of each ribbed row, sl st (93, 97, 101)

Row 2: ch1, sc, *ch1, sk1, sc* repeat * around, sl st

Row 3: ch2, hdc, ch1, work a row of feather stitch starting from the next st, you’ll have (45, 47, 49) fs in total. Finish with hdc, sl st

Row 4: Repeat Row 2

Row 5: Repeat Row 3 (45, 47, 49 fs)

Row 6: Repeat Row 2, (sc row) working 4 dec sts evenly across the row

Row 7: Repeat Row 3 (fs row) (44, 46, 48 fs)

Row 8: Repeat Row 2 (sc row)

Row 9: Repeat Row 3 (fs row) (44, 46, 48 fs)

Row 10: Repeat Row 2, (sc row) working 4 dec sts evenly across the row

Row 11: Repeat Row 3 (fs row) (43, 45, 47 fs)

Row 12: Repeat Row 2 (sc row)

Row 15: Repeat Row 3 (fs row) (39, 41, 44 fs)
