Tunisian CAL Lace Square Pattern

Have you tried Tunisian crochet? I first learned last year as a fun lockdown challenge, taking part in a Tunisian blanket CAL hosted by Knitter Knotter. So many people loved it that she’s running another one currently, all throughout 2021! This square is part of that CAL to be part of the bigger blanket at the end, you can find everything you’d like to know about Arunima’s Tunisian Blanket CAL here.

Every square in the CAL uses aran/worsted yarn and will finish at around 12×12″, including this square.

There are 25 squares in total, from 25 different crochet designers from all over the world!

What you’ll need

  • Approx 130 yards of a medium worsted weight yarn
  • 8.0mm tunisian hook, or size needed for gauge
  • Scissors and needle for finishing

The pink I have used is Stylecraft Special Aran in Pale Rose.

I have this Tunisian crochet hook set and I love them!

Stitches & Abbreviations

Chain – ch
Yarn over – yo
Stitch(es) – st(s)
Tunisian Simple Stitch – tss
Edge stitch – work a tunisian simple stitch / tss but through both vertical bars at the end of your row

Special Stitches

Lace return – ch3, yo and pull through the next 6 loops (including the one on your hook from the last ch of 3), *ch4, yo and pull through the next 6 loops* repeat * until you have 2 loops remaining, ch2, yo and pull through last 2 loops
Return – ch1, *yo pull through 2 loops* repeat * to the end

Gauge

In 2×2″: 6 rows of 8 Tunisian simple stitches, unblocked

Notes

Stitch counts will be in brackets at the end of each row

On the lace return, keep chs loose as you will need to work into each one on the following rows

Should you want to adjust the size of your square, make sure the starting chain is a multiple of 5 plus 2

The square photographed is slightly smaller than the one the instructions are for. The written instructions will have 9 clusters, a better size to fit in with the Knitter Knotter CAL.

Tunisian CAL Lace Square Pattern

Foundation Row – ch47, pull up a loop from the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and each ch to the end (47). Return

Row 1 – skip the first vertical bar, Tss in each st until the last, work edge st (47). Lace Return

Row 2 – pull up a loop from every ch and in the top of your cluster of 6 loops to the end, skip the last ch, work edge st (47). Return

Row 3 – Repeat Row 1

Row 4 – Repeat Row 2

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until the square measures 12 inches from the foundation row (approx 32 rows in total).

Bind-off Row: work a final row of sl sts, inserting your hook each time as you would with the Tss. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Weave in ends block if required (your square may have a slight curl though should be fairly square in shape), pinning to finished size.

If this is your first square, make sure to go back and check out the other squares in the CAL and catch up with your favourites!
