Newborn Baby Hat Crochet Pattern
What you’ll need to crochet a baby hat
- <60g aran weight yarn (for up to 12 months)
- 5.5mm/I hook
- Scissors and needle for finishing
I’ve used Paintbox Simply Aran in Blush Pink and Misty Grey, but there are 49 shades to choose from!

Chain – ch
Slip Stitch – sl st
Stitch(es) – st(s)
Skip – sk
Single Crochet – sc
Double Crochet – dc
Half Double Crochet – hdc
Special Stitches
Hdc2tog
Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
Pull up a loop from the next st (4 on hook)
Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops
Gauge
In 4×4″: 8 rows of 14 dc
Notes
- Stitch counts will be in brackets at the end of each row
- Starting chs do not count as a stitch
- ‘2dc’ means work 2 dc into the same stitch
- ‘dc 2’ means work a dc into the next 2 stitches
This pattern is for size 0-3 months, with a finished flat measurement of 6″ wide and 5″ high.
Newborn Baby Hat Crochet Pattern
Row 1: In a magic ring, ch2, work 11 dc, sl st to join to the 1st dc (11)
Row 2: ch2, 2dc in each dc, sl st (22)
Row 3: ch2, *2dc, dc*, repeat * around, sl st (33)
Row 4: ch2, *2dc, dc 2* repeat * around, sl st (44)
Row 5: ch2, hdc2tog across the next 2 sts, ch1 (do not sk1), *hdc2tog, ch1* repeat * around, sl st (44)
Row 6: ch2, dc in each st, sl st (44)
Row 7: Repeat Row 6 (44)
Row 8: Repeat Row 5 (44)
Row 9: Repeat Row 6 (44)
Brim
Will be worked in vertical rows, moving across your last dc row and all the way around to form a ribbed section around the edge.
Row 1: ch6, turn, sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch towards your work, sl st into the next dc across from your starting ch, turn (5)
Row 2: sl st in the back loop of each st to the end, turn (5)
Row 3: ch1, sl st in the back loop of each st to the end, sl st into the next dc across, turn (5)
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for every remaining sc. Join your 1st row to your last row with a series of sl sts or sewing them together.
