Hibiscus Herringbone Crochet Cardigan Pattern

A free crochet cardigan pattern for women. The Hibiscus Herringbone cardigan pattern is a simple and classic style piece using the herringbone double crochet stitch. You can find a tutorial for this stitch here. I have some mittens and a headband using this stitch too if it’s a new stitch for you and you would like to practice first.

While I love some of the more detailed and sometimes intricate garments, I wanted this one to be very simple in look and construction. A great place for a garment beginner to start, as it’s made from rectangle pieces joined together, with sleeves added in the round.

This is a perfect cardigan pattern to transition into autumn/fall and winter and dress up or down.

Free Crochet Cardigan Pattern

Materials

• 500-1000g aran or worsted weight yarn. Recommend WI Soft & Smooth or Caron Simply Soft
• 5.5mm hook
• Scissors and needle for finishing

Notes

• Stitch count will be in brackets at the end of each row.
• Stitch and row counts will be in the format (S, M, L, XL)
• Starting CHs will not count as a stitch

Gauge

• 4″ x 4″ –  11 rows of 14 herringbone stitches

Back Panel

Row 1 – Work a foundation row of (58, 65, 71, 77)SC. You may prefer to CH and then work 1 SC in each CH, but be mindful of your CH tension if so.

Row 2 – CH2, turn and work 1 HBDC in each stitch across. (58, 65, 71, 77)

Repeat row 2 for a further (56, 63. 69, 75) rows, totalling (58, 65. 71, 77) rows of (58, 65, 71, 77) stitches. Close off yarn.

Front Panel (x2)

Row 1 – Work a foundation row of (21, 24, 26, 29) SC. You may prefer to CH and then work 1 SC in each CH, but be mindful of your CH tension if so. (21, 24, 26, 29)

Row 2 – CH2, turn and work 1 HBDC in each stitch across. (21, 24, 26, 29)

Repeat row 2 for a further (56, 63. 69, 75) rows, totalling (58, 65. 71, 77) rows of (21, 24, 26, 29) HBDC stitches. Close off yarn.

Join the 2 front panels to the back panel, leaving (25, 28, 31, 34) rows front and back unjoined for your sleeve space (50, 56, 62, 68 in total across both sides)

Ribbing

Join yarn to the end of one of the front panels. CH5, 1 SC in the 2nd CH from hook and next 3 CHs. SS into the next row up. CH1 and work 1 SCBL in each stitch. CH1and turn. Repeat. Continue up the front panel, with 2 rows of SC for each horizontal row of herringbone stitches.   When reaching the neckline, continue with 2 rows of SC for each HBDC stitch.

Sleeves (x2)

All sizes involve a decreasing herringbone stitch. To do this:

• Pull up a loop, 2 on hook
• Pull up a loop through the next stitch, 3 on hook
• Work the normal herringbone double from here using the 3 loops over 2 stitches

Row 1 – Join yarn to the underarm seaming point. CH2 and work 1 HBDC for each available row in the sleeve space. SS to join. (50, 56, 62, 68)

Row 2 – CH2 and TURN. Work 1 HBDC in each stitch around. SS to join. (50, 56, 62, 68)

Rows 3 to 16 – repeat Row 2.

Row 17 – CH2, turn, DEC 1 then 1 HBDC in each stitch. SS to join. (49, 55, 61, 67)
