Baby Fisherman’s Sweater Crochet Pattern

I love making baby crochet things, they’re so cute and so quick that it’s hard not to. The only thing that stops me is how quick they grow! This baby Fisherman’s Sweater crochet pattern is a fun project with some uncommon stitches, and is a great crochet pattern for both boys and girls.

In size 0 – 24 months, using snuggly aran yarn with a ribbed stitch for lots of texture. It’s made with a few extra inches for a slightly oversized, comfy fit. You won’t be able to help cuddling the baby wearing it!

The stitches used give a ribbed texture by using different loops in the stitch, and the edging is done with a slip stitch ribbing. You can find videos for the slip stitching ribbing here and hdc in the 3rd loop here.

What you’ll need:

  • Aran/worsted weight yarn (specific amounts in size guide section)
  • 6mm/J hook for body, 5mm/H hook for ribbing
  • Scissors and needle for finishing

Concentration level:

Beginner – intermediate level garment pattern as gauge is important, but minimal increase and decrease stitches.

Special Stitches

Extended Half Double Crochet (ehdc)

  • YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through one loop, YO and pull through remaining three loops

Decrease (dec)

Decrease stitches can be different based on whether the row you’re working on is in the back loop or the 3rd loop. To decrease, YO and place hook through the relevant loop of both the 1st and 2nd sts. Pull up a loop through both sts, then work the ehdc as normal.

Gauge

  • 7 rows of 15 sts in 4″x4″ using the following pattern and 6mm hook:
    • Row 1: ehdc in each st
    • Row 2; ehdc in the 3rd loop of each st
    • Row 3: ehdc in the back loop of each st
    • Repeat rows 2 and 3

Join the front and back panels with a whip stitch across the shoulders and up the sides. Leave the following number of stitches free for the sleeves: (12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

Sleeves

The sleeves can made separately from the body and joined afterwards, or by joining yarn to the underarm and working from the body outwards.

Row 1 – starting separately: ch(24, 26, 28, 30, 32), sl st to form a loop, ch2 and ehdc in each ch, turn

Row 1 – starting from the body: join yarn to the underarm seam, ch2 and ehdc in each st, turn (24, 26, 28, 30, 32)

Row 2: ch2, ehdc in 3rd loop of each st, turn

Row 3: ch2, ehdc in back loop of each st, turn

Row 4: ch2, ehdc in 3rd loop of each st until halfway around the sleeve, dec, ehdc in 3rd loop of each st, turn (23, 25, 27, 29, 31)

Rows 5 to 6: ch2, ehdc in each st, following the same back loop/3rd loop order, turn (23, 25, 27, 29, 31)

Row 7 0-3: ch2, *ehdc in back loop x3, dec*, repeat * around, turn (19)

Row 7 all other sizes: ch2, ehdc in back loop of each st, turn (25, 27, 29, 31)

Row 8 0-3: ch2, *ehdc in 3rd loop x3, dec*, repeat * around, finish (16)

Row 8 3-6: ch2, *ehdc in 3rd loop x3, dec*, repeat * around, turn (20)

Row 8 all other sizes: ch2, ehdc in 3rd loop of each st, turn (27, 29, 31)

Row 10 all other sizes: ch2, ehdc in 3rd loop of each st, turn (28, 30)

Row 11 6-12, 12-18: ch2, *ehdc in back loop x3, dec*, repeat * around, size 6-12 finish (17, 23)

Row 11 18-24: ch2, ehdc in back loop of each st until halfway around, dec, ehdc in 3rd loop of each st, turn (29)

Row 12: ch2, *ehdc in 3rd loop x3, dec*, repeat * around, size 12-18 finish (19, 24)

Row 13: ch2, *ehdc in back loop x3, dec*, repeat * around, finish (20)

Edging (change to 5mm hook)

Making a length of sl st ribbing and sewing on to the body afterwards is likely to give the neatest finish, though you can build the ribbing from the body if you prefer to work that way.

Neckline – suggest 40-50 rows

Sleeve cuffs – suggest 15-20 rows

Bottom edge – suggest 40-50 rows for a pulled in look, add more rows for a straight edged fit.

Weave in ends, block if required, and finish!
