The Pick & Mix blanket is my first blanket pattern and i’m so excited to share it with you. I don’t usually get much inspiration from blankets and wouldn’t say they’re my ‘thing’, but I had this idea in my head for a while so had to make it and write it up. It’s a crochet hexagon blanket pattern that will end up totally unique to you! I’ll explain why, but it’s in the name…
The crochet hexagon blanket pattern provides instructions for a number of different hexagons, that you pick and choose from to put together the hexagons you like best into whatever arrangement you want! You could use all of them, mix up a couple, or even use one single hexagon throughout in different colours. I’m definitely going to do this on the next one I make.
There is an example template in the PDF pattern that you can follow if you prefer to have it laid out for you, and a blank one so that you can plan out your own unique design.

Puff Stitch
• Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 on hook)
• Yarn over, pull up another loop (5 on hook)
• Yarn over, pull up another loop, pull through all 7 loops, ch1
Cluster Stitch
• Yarn over, pull up a loop, pull through 2 of the 3 loops (2 on hook)
• Yarn over, pull up a loop, pull through 2 of the 4 loops (3 on hook)
• Yarn over, pull up a loop, pull through 2 of the 5 loops, pull through the remaining 4 loops, ch1

Tension
• It’s not essential to meet a required tension, though a different hook or yarn size may result in a different sized finished blanket or differing yarn requirements
• Each hexagon should measure approx. 5.5”
• Working to this size and using 30 full hexagons will provide a finished baby blanket sized approx. 30×30”
Pattern Notes
• Stitch count will be in brackets at the end of each row
• Starting chains DO count as a stitch unless otherwise specified, and final slip stitches will be into the starting chain
• Instructions are given for each hexagon type for you to choose how many of each you prefer
• Steps written in *this format* will be repeated the number of times specified after the *. E.g.: *dc ch1 dc* repeat * 5x – this step will be done a total of 5 times
Pick & Mix Crochet Hexagon Blanket Pattern
Basic Hexagon
Rnd 1 – ch4, sl st into the 1st ch to form a loop. Ch3, dc into the loop, ch1. 2dc into the loop, ch1 repeat * 5x. sl st into the starting ch3. (6 sides of 2dcs)
Rnd 2 – ch3, dc into the same stitch, dc in each dc up until the ch sp, dc in ch sp, ch1, dc in ch sp, dc in each dc, dc in ch sp, ch1 repeat 5x. sl st. (6 sides of 4 dcs)
Rnd 3 – Repeat Rnd 2 (6 sides of 6 dcs)
Rnd 4 – Repeat Rnd 2 (6 sides of 8 dcs)
Rnd 5 – Repeat Rnd 2 (6 sides of 10 dcs)
Finish off, leaving a long tail to join with at the end
Front Post Hexagon
This will follow the same structure as the basic hexagon, but alternating dc and fpdc. For each row you will work dc into dc and fpdc around fpdc, with additional stitches on the corners to increase.
Rnd 1 – ch4, sl st into the 1st ch to form a loop. Ch3, dc into the loop, ch1. 2dc into the loop, ch1 repeat * 5x. sl st. (6 sides of 2dcs)
Rnd 2 – ch3, fpdc around the ch3 in the prev row, dc in the next dc, fpdc around that same dc from the prev row, ch1. dc in ch sp, fpdc, dc, fpdc around that same dc, ch1 repeat * 5x. sl st. (6 sides of 4 dcs)
Rnd 3 – ch3, dc into the same stitch, fpdc, dc, fpdc, dc in ch sp, ch1. dc in ch sp, fpdc round the first st, dc into every dc and fpdc around every fpdc, dc in ch sp, ch1 repeat * 5x. sl st. (6 sides of 6 dcs)
Rnd 4 – ch3, fpdc around the ch3 in the prev row, dc, fpdc, dc, fpdc, dc, fpdc around the same dc, ch1 dc in ch sp, fpdc around the first stitch, dc into every dc and fpdc around every fpdc, fpdc around the same last dc, ch1 repeat * 5x. sl st. (6 sides of 8 dcs)
Rnd 5 – ch4, tr into the same stitch, fptr, tr, fptr, tr, fptr, tr, fptr, tr in ch sp, ch1. tr in ch sp, tr into every dc and fptr around every fpdc, tr in ch sp, ch1 repeat * 5x. sl st. (6 sides of 10 trs)
Finish off, leaving a long tail to join with at the end.
Puff Stitch Hexagon
Rnd 1 – ch4, sl st into the 1st ch to form a loop. Work 6 puff stitches into the loop, sl st. (6 puff sts)
Rnd 2 – ch2, puff stitch in the same st, 2dc in the top of the next puff st, work 2 puff sts in between the 2 from the prev row, 2 dcs in the top of the next puff st repeat * 5x, finishing with an extra puff st, sl st. (6 sides of puff, 2 dc, puff)
Rnd 3 – ch2, puff stitch in the same st, dc in each dc, puff st work 2 puff sts in between the 2 from the prev row, dc in each dc repeat * 5x, puff st, sl st. (6 sides of puff, 2 dc, puff)
Rnd 4 – ch2, puff stitch in the same st, dc in between the puff st and dc, dc in each dc, dc in between the puff st and dc, puff st, *work 2 puff sts, dc in between the puff st and dc, dc in each dc, dc in between the puff st and dc, puff st * repeat * 5x, puff st, sl st. (6 sides of puff, 4 dc, puff)
Rnd 5 – Repeat Rnd 4 (6 sides of puff, 6 dc, puff)

Cluster Stitch Hexagon
This version will work in a circle until the last round where it becomes a hexagon.
Rnd 1 – ch4, sl st into the 1st ch to form a loop, ch3, dc11 into the loop, sl st (12)
Rnd 2 – ch2, puff st in each dc, 2 in last, sl st (13 puff sts)
Rnd 3 – ch2, cluster stitch in between each puff st from the prev row, sl st. (13 clusters)
Rnd 4 – ch2, 2 clusters sts in between each cluster from the prev row, sl st. (26 clusters)
Rnd 5 – ch3, dc in same st, work a side of 8 dc, working both in between and in the top of each cluster, dc ch1 dc in the next st, *dc in the next 8 sts, (in between and into each cluster), dc ch1 dc in the next st * repeat * 4x. Dc in the next 6 sts, 3dc in the last st, sl st. (6 sides of 10 dc)
Finish off, leaving a long tail to join with at the end.
Flower Hexagon
This version will work in a circle until the last round where it becomes a hexagon.
Rnd 1 – ch4, sl st into the 1st chain to form a loop, sc8 into the loop, sl st (8)
Rnd 2 – ch3, dc in the same st, 2dc in each st around, sl st (16)
Rnd 3 – ch4, sk1, sl st into the front loop of the dc repeat * around (8 ‘loops’)
Rnd 4 – sl st into the first loop, ch2, dc5 into the loop, sc into the sl st from the prev rnd, sl st into the next loop repeat * around finishing with sc into the last sl st from the prev rnd, sl st.
Rnd 5 – ch3 (does not count as a stitch) dc in the back loop of each dc from Rnd 2, sl st (16)
Rnd 6 – ch4, tr in the next st, 2tr in each st around, sl st into first tr (30)
Rnd 7 – ch2 (does not count as a stitch), puff st in each st around, sl st into first puff (30 puffs)
Rnd 8 – sts will be worked into the top of each puff stitch from Rnd 7 Ch3, dc in top of first puff, 2hdc, 2sc, 2hdc, 2dc, ch1, 2dc, 2hdc, 2sc, 2hdc, 2dc, ch1 repeat * 5x, sl st (6 sides of 10 sts)
Finish off, leaving a long tail to join with at the end.
Make any combination of hexagons for your blanket and join using a whip stitch or your preferred seaming method.
Half Hexagons to fill in the gaps down the sides
Rnd 1 – ch4, sl st into the 1st ch to form a loop. Ch3, dc into the loop, ch1, 2dc into the loop, ch1, 2dc into the loop. (3 sides of 2dcs)
Rnd 2 – ch3, turn, dc into the same st, dc in the next dc, dc ch1 dc in ch sp, dc in each dc, dc ch1 dc in ch sp, dc in each dc, 2dc in starting ch from prev row. (3 sides of 4 dcs)
Rnd 3 – Repeat Rnd 2 (3 sides of 6 dcs)
Rnd 4 – Repeat Rnd 2 (3 sides of 8 dcs)
Rnd 5 – Repeat Rnd 2 (3 sides of 10 dcs)
Border
After your hexagons are joined, join your yarn to the top left corner of your blanket, to work the border down the left straight edge. Ch3
Straight edges: – Into each full hexagon side, hdc in each st and 1 into the ch sp of the hexagon. You will have 12 hdcs for each – Into each half hexagon side, 2hdc into every horizontal row made, with 1 in the centre loop where you started. You will have 21 for each – Continue in this way for the whole side, with a hdc ch1 hdc in the very corner
Pointed edges (after you have worked the dc ch1 dc in the corner): – Hdc in each st along the first hexagon point up until where the next hexagon starts – sc2tog over the ch sps of each of the hexagons to ‘join’ them – Continue with hdc up the side of the next hexagon up until the ch sp, hdc ch1 hdc, repeat around
After the hdc round, finish with a round of dc. On the straight edges, dc in every hdc. On the pointed edges, dc in every dc, skip 2 sts where each point meets (where the sc2tog was worked on the prev row), and dc ch1 dc in each ch sp from the prev row.
Finish here and weave in ends, or add your own border rounds afterwards!
